Municipal & County

LGBTQ individuals interact with the law most frequently at the municipal level. GSE encourages municipalities to be proactive in establishing ordinances to make their cities more affirming to LGBTQ people.

Needs Assessment

Completing a needs assessment is the first step towards making your municipality more inclusive to LGBTQ residents. Contact us and we’ll set up a meeting, go over a brief questionnaire, and provide an initial assessment. We will review current policies to ensure they meet the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index standards and offer recommendations for improvement.

Policy Assistance

Garden State Equality can share legal expertise around SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) law and help you develop and audit local ordinances and policies, including around nondiscrimination laws, inclusive municipal employment practices, municipal services for vulnerable communities, law enforcement practices, and LGBTQ leadership.

Trainings

Our trainings offer a review of cultural competency terminology and key concepts; discussion of legal and policy issues; and a thorough review of best practices for diversity and equity on the municipal level.

Other Speaking Engagements

Representatives from Garden State Equality are available to speak to municipal officials and community members.
