Create an Override Club to win marriage equality
Want to help Garden State Equality override Governor Christie’s veto of the marriage equality bill? Create an Override Club by gathering at least nine other friends and neighbors outside your family who live in your state legislative district. You and the nine others can all be part of the same local organization or congregation, or not. The others can be folks on your block or your friends across the district. Please email us now about your interest in creating an Override Club – you don’t need to include or even know, yet, the names of the nine others you would ask to join. Please email OverrideClub@GardenStateEquality.org your name, hometown and cell phone number. Put OVERRIDE CLUB in the subject line of your email. Your Override Club will meet every month right in your neck of the woods. Garden State Equality will provide a free kickoff dinner for your Override Club members. Each subsequent month, we’ll provide organizing tools and strategies. All you have to provide are the Override Club members and a shared commitment to overriding the Governor’s veto. If you want to know which of your friends and neighbors live in your state legislative district, visit www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/municipalities.asp and click on your municipality. You’ll then see your district’s other municipalities. In New Jersey there are no separate state Senate and Assembly districts. You live in one state legislative district represented by one state Senator and two Assembly members.
Circulate a marriage equality petition in person to your family, friends and neighbors
Click here for a hard-copy petition in support of marriage equality that you can print out and take with you when you meet others. Make as many copies as you need. You can even take copies and go door to door in your neighborhood, a highly effective way to guarantee your petition is signed by constituents of your legislators. When you’re finished circulating the petition, you can get it to us in several ways. You can mail your copies to Garden State Equality, 40 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey 07042. You can call us at (973) GSE-LGBT or (973) 473-5428, and we will make arrangements to collect your completed petition pages. Or you can also email a pdf of the petition pages to Petition@GardenStateEquality.org and include your name, hometown and cell phone number in your email.
Stop bullying in your school district
The US Department of Education has issued a study ranking New Jersey’s anti-bullying law, which Garden State Equality wrote with legislators, #1 among the anti-bullying laws of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. And The New York Times described New Jersey’s Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights as “the nation’s toughest law against bullying and harassment in schools.” Our resource center will help you make sure your school district is properly enforcing the law.
