The following statement can be attributed to Troy Stevenson, Executive Director of Garden State Equality:
“My father who adopted me when I was 7 was second to no father, and I have no doubt that Justice Roberts’ children feel the same. I am outraged that someone purportedly representing a family organization would characterize adoptive families as somehow ‘lesser than.’ No family created by loving parents, regardless of sexual orientation, is the second-best option for children in need of homes. It’s outrageous, beef-witted, and simply hateful to say otherwise.”
BACKGROUND:
Mark Sherman of the Associated Press reports the following quote from John Eastman, chairman of the National Organization for Marriage, in his story yesterday about the families of Supreme Court justices:
“You’re looking at what is the best course societywide to get you the optimal result in the widest variety of cases. That often is not open to people in individual cases. Certainly adoption in families headed, like Chief Roberts’ family is, by a heterosexual couple, is by far the second-best option.”
